Empowering Nevada’s Hardworking Families

— by Speaker Jason Frierson

Last week we made progress on many different bills, including a number of our blueprint priorities. Two of these are highlighted below. This week is another important deadline here in Carson City, with bills needing to be voted out of committee by April 12th.

I was honored to spend a few moments with Dolores Huerta who was in Carson City last Wednesday. Dolores is an American civil rights leader and labor activist who co-founded the National Farmworkers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. Her leadership is an inspiration to so many and we were happy to welcome her to the legislative building.

We are now more than halfway through the session and are looking forward to continuing to do the critical work Nevadans sent us here to do in these final 60 days.

Blueprint Highlights

Last week there were hearings on two of our Blueprint priorities. We heard AB486 which would create a Department of Outdoor Recreation. Creating this office would help promote access to all of the incredible public lands, and parks in our state, not just for Nevadans, but for people who come to Nevada from across the world each year and contribute to the tourism industry. I want to thank Assemblywoman Maggie Carlton for her leadership on this and look forward to seeing this office become a reality.

AB431 is a bill I am proud to sponsor that would restore voting rights for Nevadans who were convicted of a crime but paid their debt to society. I believe that we should not continue to punish individuals who are no longer incarcerated and we should be encouraging people to participate in their government by voting in elections, not making it more difficult.

Legislator Spotlight

Sandra Jauregui moved to Las Vegas in 2009 to complete her bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While attending college she interned and later worked with United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Her passion and drive for community involvement led her to her next position with Financial Guidance Center where she served as Director of Community Development and Partnerships and as Director for the Attorney General’s housing program, Home Again: The Nevada Homeowner Relief Program. She is dedicated to helping Nevadan’s with housing and giving them the knowledge to take control of their financial future and become educated consumers. Sandra has also been a fierce advocate for gun violence prevention, using her survival story of the 1 October massacre to push for meaningful change.

Sandra has been very involved in the community throughout her duration in Nevada. She served as the Chair of Government Affairs and Public Relations for NAHREP Nevada, National Association of Real Estate Professionals. Through that organization, she helped the Latino community realize the dream of sustainable homeownership. Sandra was an active PAYBAC speaker and was profiled by the Latin Chamber as the next Rising Latina Star.
