Catherine Cortez Masto’s Statement on Trump/Heck Connection

Many of you have likely seen news of Congressman Heck’s desperate, craven attempt to distance himself from Donald Trump.  As you watch his efforts, please know and share these simple facts:

  • This is not leadership.
  • This is a craven, desperate, pathetic attempt by Rep Heck to save his political career.
  • For 9 months, Congressman Heck has stood loyally by Donald Trump as Trump has demeaned and disrespected women, called Mexican’s rapists and murderers, and called for a ban on Muslims.

Here is Catherine Cortez Masto’s statement on Heck’s reversal in position:

“For nine months, Joe Heck has been Donald Trump’s strongest supporter in Nevada as Trump has demeaned and disrespected women, made racists comments towards Latinos and showed himself completely unfit to be President. Heck said he had ‘high hopes’ about Trump becoming President, that he completely supported him and that he had no doubts about Trump having his finger on the nuclear button. What you’re seeing now is not leadership, it’s Joe Heck trying to save his career, but Joe Heck’s made clear that he’s with Donald Trump.”

As Rep Heck campaigns with Mitt Romney today, he probably hopes voters think he and Romney have the same opinions of Donald Trump. But don’t be fooled. While Mitt Romney has condemned Donald Trump from the start, Rep Heck still refuses to withdraw his support for Donald Trump even after a video surfaced of Donald Trump making disgusting and offensive comments about sexually assaulting women.

“I don’t want to see trickle-down racism. I don’t want to see a president of the United States saying things which change the character of the generations of Americans that are following. Presidents have an impact on the nature of our nation, and trickle-down racism, trickle-down bigotry, trickle-down misogyny, all these things are extraordinarily dangerous to the heart and character of America.”

“[Trump]’s out there talking about what he needs to talk about to run for President.”

– KSNV, 8/27/15

“I am far from the first to conclude that Donald Trump lacks the temperament of be president. After all, this is an individual who mocked a disabled reporter, who attributed a reporter’s questions to her menstrual cycle, who mocked a brilliant rival who happened to be a woman due to her appearance, who bragged about his marital affairs, and who laces his public speeches with vulgarity.”

-Politico, 3/3/16

REPORTER: “You’re completely supporting him?”

HECK: “I am.”

REPORTER: “You trust him having his finger on the nuclear button?”

HECK: I do.”

REPORTER: “Why do you say that?”

HECK: Why wouldn’t I?”

– CNN, 9/7/16

I wanted my grandkids to see that I simply couldn’t ignore what Mr. Trump was saying and doing, which revealed a character and temperament unfit for the leader of the free world. I know that some people are offended that someone who lost and is the former nominee continues to speak, but that’s how I can sleep at night.”

-The Wall Street Journal, 5/28/16

“I have high hopes that we will see Donald Trump become the next president.”

-Pahrump Valley Times, 6/1/16

Heck said that Republicans publicly denouncing Donald Trump only comes back to look bad on the party as a whole. “You’re entitled to vote for whoever you want, but you don’t have to add gasoline to the fire,” said Heck.

-The Record-Courier, 8/12/16

“Campaigning with Mitt Romney today, Congressman Heck probably hopes voters believe they have the same position when it comes to Donald Trump, but don’t be fooled,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for the Nevada Democratic Party. “While Mitt Romney spoke out about Donald Trump from the start, Congressman Heck supported Donald Trump and stuck by his side through every offensive comment and display of lack of character.  It’s time for Joe Heck to completely rescind his support for the man he said he has ‘high hopes’ will become President.”
