If you’re not currently registered in Humboldt County, you MUST register by May 13, 2012 (30 days prior to the election) to be able to vote in the Primary Election on June 12, 2012.  Registering aft that will will make you ineligible to vote in the June 12th primary UNLESS you can show proof of your residenct in Humboldt County for 30 days prior to the Primary Election, or as of May 13, 2012.  If your registering after May 13, 2012, you will need to do so in person at the County Clerk’s office (2nd floor of the Humboldt County Court House).

If you have had a name change, you will need to re-register.  Also, if you’ve moved since registering,you will need to contact the County Clerk’s office to complete a change of address form (changing your address could put in a different voting precinct than the one at your previous address).

NV State Democratic Convention
As a reminder, registration is now taking place for the June 9-10 Nevada State Democratic Party convention. Democrats interested in running for the member at-large positions on the NSDP Executive Board or the National Committee Person positions have until 5:00 p.m. on May 18th to file. Xiomara RodriguezWhat do I stand for?  This is a question I have been asked frequently.  The answer is a simple one; it is the core values that make me who and what I am. I am running because it is time to stop playing politics with the people of Nevada and this country.  It is time to start working TOGETHER to move this state and this country forward.  WE CANNOT continue to be content with party line actions that affect us all.Our current elected officials got to Congress with the cry of “JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.”  But they have not done anything to create those jobs, especially not in Nevada.  Nevada still has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and still nothing is done.Here in Nevada we have the ability to tap into our wind, solar, and geothermal resources.  By becoming the leader in alternative energy, we can create much needed jobs and help reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.  In the process, we can become the nation’s leader in the development of alternative energy.Our politicians talk about the need to balance our budget.  I have to agree that this country needs a balanced budget, but how do we do that.  I feel the best way to balance the budget is by creating income.  We have cut our agencies to the bare bones.  We cannot cut ourselves out of this one.  We need to add income.We CANNOT continue to tax 99% of our population for the benefit of 1%.  We need to tax that 1%.  In the last week, our current representative in Congress said that even if the people of Nevada asked him to raise our taxes he would not.  Why make that statement; because he is acting in favor of that 1% and not for the benefit of the citizens of this state.  Just remember that he signed the Norquist pledge not to raises taxes (in reality, the pledge is not to raise taxes on the 1%).Let’s also look at what has happened in the last few weeks regarding women’s health issues.  Our Representatives in Congress have mounted a series of actions to restrict women’s access to much needed health care.  They have also proposed very restrictive regulations and reporting procedures for doctors.  In the case of the State of Virginia, the Republican Party attempted to pass a bill that would require doctors to perform an invasive procedure which is absolutely unnecessary on women.  The Republican Party is pushing similar measures all over the country in an effort to restrict women’s access to health care.  Is this what we want for our state and our country?It is time that we solve our immigration problems; we cannot continue to let every state approve draconian immigration laws aimed at one group of immigrants.  These measures cause chaos and divide families.  It is time to stop this.  It is time we, as a country, take the right steps toward comprehensive immigration reform and toward passage of the DREAM Act.Our cry for this election needs to be “Enough is Enough”; enough of the stagnant actions of our Congress.  It is time to start moving this country forward.The people of CD2 and the State of Nevada deserve a representative who is willing to work for them, not broken promises, inaction and the “party line”.These are some of the reasons I am running for Congress.

The State Board of Education establishes policy.

• Use national standards to develop a curriculum that delivers knowledge and skills in the subjects we know Nevada students need for future success.
• Improve statewide standards that measure student progress and proficiency and evaluate educator job performance.
• Recruit and retain highly qualified, effective educational leaders and teachers and make sure they have up-to-date educational materials and classroom technology, ongoing professional development for staff, and fair and competitive compensation.

The State Board of Education encourages innovation.

• Offer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses to give students the technical foundation they need in today’s society and to provide an educated workforce.
• Return career and trade courses that link Nevada students to the Nevada job market.
• Use successful, innovative methods that reach English Language Learners, special education students, students with disabilities or other at risk students.
• Enable regional cooperation for small and rural districts to jointly obtain needed instructional programs, services and materials.
• Institute programs that improve graduation rates and reduce the numbers of students who require remedial programs before they start college or jobs.

The State Board of Education demands safe and welcoming schools.

• Update school safety plans, and include anti-bullying programs.
• Ensure all students receive fair, equal and equitable treatment and access to educational opportunities.

The State Board of Education advocates for all learners.

• Urge the Legislature and to the Governor’s Office to work in a bipartisan way to create a new, broad-based and stable tax structure for Nevada that will consistently and reliably fund quality education in all school districts.
• Strengthen the voice and involvement of students, parents and community members by hosting regular dialogues about current statewide educational issues and policies.
